PREMIERE OF THE DAY

Mikhalok & Chemerov – Chernobyl forevа (Kuzma Skryabin cover)

The abandoned houses of Pripyat and the old equipment of the liquidators – the leaders of Lyapis-98 and Dymna Sumish – shot a video in Chernobyl to remind everyone of the meaning of Kuzma Scriabin’s long-known song – Chernobyl Foreva, in the project “Sounds of Chernobyl”. “Do not break, do not saw, do not cut, the branch on which you sit, do not wait, do not be silent – who is silent, will wait for trouble” – the first words of the song with a very important message that Chernobyl is not only a man-made and environmental disaster, and informational. The omission of information about the accident in the past has led to an insane number of victims, and silence around it today can lead to new trouble.

STASIK

(Anastasia Shevchenko)

Singer, combat veteran in eastern Ukraine (medical shooter and self-help and mutual aid instructor under fire), former actress of the Roof Theater and TV presenter.

“Chernobyl has fallen into our blind spot. We are ready to give this land, these people, and this history to alienation, just not to realize that Chernobyl is not the past, but our present, and what we, our children, grandchildren, and dozens of generations will live with it”

Siarhei Mikhalok (BRUTTO, LYAPIS-98)
and Oleksandr Chemerov

The invitation of the Belarusian bands BRUTTO and Lyapis-98 leader – Siarhei Mikhalok and the Ukrainian-American musician – Oleksandr Chemerov to the Chernobyl project shows that the radiation clouds and human victims of the accident have no borders. In 1986, Chernobyl affected the whole of Europe, but Ukraine and Belarus suffered notable casualties. About 8.5 million people received significant doses of radiation in the first days after the accident. Such brutal, common hours of the disaster and complex history have united us, so this project is necessary at the international and global level.”, – comments the creative curator of the project Valeriy Korshunov.

KAZKA

Electro-folk band, the first Ukrainian-language band to reach the top ten of the SHAZAM international chart, and one of the record holders among Ukrainian artists on YouTube, one of the world’s most famous bands from Ukraine.

“The Chernobyl tragedy is a catastrophe that has left deep wounds on the body of our planet. It is time not to turn back, but to remember, this the duty of all future generations. Therefore, thanks to this cool project, we will try to preserve the memory of the Chernobyl tragedy forever with the help of music, ” said Oleksandra Zaritska, the band’s soloist.

KRUT

(Marina Krut)

Ukrainian singer and bandura player, finalist of the National selection for Eurovision-2020

“Chernobyl is, first of all, a great tragedy that can never be forgotten. Silence at that time destroyed the lives of tens of thousands of people. Let’s not be silent, at least for now. Chernobyl is a topic that needs to be discussed, myths dispelled, and information conveyed in various ways so as not to repeat the past mistakes. I have a direct bearing on this tragedy. After all, this is my country, I live here every day, and this is my generation that is overcoming the consequences. I do care,” KRUT comments on her participation.”

vagondrivers

The Ukrainian electronic band, formed in 2013 by the former frontman of “My Friend My Truck” Anton Slepakov and guitarist Valentyn Panyuta, a Kharkiv band member, “Lyuk”.

“Of course, the theme of the Chernobyl tragedy could not pass by us. It concerns absolutely all Ukrainians and residents of our then Soviet country. Stas and Andriy, members of the “vagondrivers”, were born a year before the accident, and Valentin and I are a little older. Already in the status of schoolchildren, we remember that terrible year. Cynical 1 May Day demonstrations, the press’s and the country’s leaders silence,  and a terrible quiet panic near the station, railway ticket offices and bus stations. For more than 30 years, the pain of the tragedy’s bitterness has become even more palpable. Unfortunately, humanity has not wanted to hear the alarm, and human-made disasters occur with depressing regularity. These accidents most often occur as a result of natural disasters, but also due to worn-out equipment, greed, or carelessness. The memory of them is an essential lesson for humanity because natural disasters can harm us, but not the planet, but human-made are a threat to the whole world, “- Anton Slepakov

Atomic Simao

Ukrainian band from Kyiv playing instrumental psychedelic jazz.

Andriy Volkov: “At the age of 2, right after the accident, my mother and I watched a bicycle race from the balcony, which took place in Kyiv on May 1 after the accident. However, my family has a doctor, a liquidator. According to his parents, when he returned in camouflage, I did not recognize him, was frightened, and cried. A company of disinfectants, he was a sanitary doctor, and the medical staff was conscripted. “

Heorhiy Valchuk: “I was born one month and two days before the explosion. The scale of the catastrophe in Kyiv was not discussed. My mother found out about it when my grandfather called her from Moscow, and urgently told her to go as far as possible. So we found ourselves in Anapa. I don’t remember much about it myself. I will go to Chernobyl for the first time, and for us, it will be a very informative experience, which we will implement shortly.”

GusGus

GusGus is a world-famous electronic band from Iceland

GusGus music is a perfect combination of techno, funk, ambient, downtempo.

Bjarki

Icelandic electronic musician and producer

“Every day, we try to fight nature. This metal, these things – they rust and fall down. Nature will just bury it, eat it. This is not a problem. We are a problem. That’s why the concept of me being here is more about me want to tell the story about nature, how nature will survive without us. And that’s something that I find inspiring. And to feel that we are actually nothing, nature is above all. I am here to experience that.

I can only imagine how it was to be in this situation, in Chernobyl, 30 years ago. That I would need to pack up my stuff for three days and never come back, leave my life here. It’s quite touching”

Telepopmusik

Christophe Hettier

French musician and producer, participant of the Grammy-nominated TELEPOPMUSIK project

“After the HBO miniseries became a hit, more and more people became interested in the Chernobyl accident. However, ardent fans of the series sometimes forget that Chernobyl is a great tragedy that happened and that we need to treat it decently. In the Dreams video, with ARTEFACT’s support, we tried to put an end to the “i”, tracing the history of Pripyat before, during, and after the accident. We have a touching and aesthetic tribute to the lives that were marred by the explosion.”

Dub FX

(Benjamin Stanford)

One of the best beatboxers globally, the Australian indie musician combines dubstep, hip-hop, and reggae in his live performances.

“I knew a little about Chernobyl. When the accident happened, I was only three years old. It went somewhere far away, in the Soviet Union. I did not know then about such a country as Ukraine. Now, I saw what the Ukrainians faced, learned about their feat. I was very impressed by the trip. I will tell my grandchildren about it!”

ABOUT THE PROJECT

“The Sounds of Chernobyl is a modern rethinking of the famous catastrophe by musicians who will tell Chernobyl’s stories from different angles in each track. It is also significant that such an album is created with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, on the eve of the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident, “ said the creative curator of the project Valeriy Korshunov.

The Sounds of Chernobyl Audio Library is a collection of sounds recorded by Ukrainian media artist, ARTEFACT project author Valeriy Korshunov, back in 2018 and became the beginning of the Sounds of Chernobyl album and unite all the compositions of the thematic album.

The Chernobyl disaster affected millions of people around the world. This is a harrowing story, which is still painful to talk about, but any injury must be treated. Music and songs have always helped to feel and rethink. That is why the team of Ukrainian artists ARTEFACT created the project “Sounds of Chernobyl“. Thanks to musicians’ work, this project helps to look differently at the History, which has intertwined the lives of so many people and will forever remain on the world’s map, the greatest human-made disaster just 100 kilometers from Kyiv.
